Principal’s corner:
“The addictive nature of the internet”, “The hidden influence of cyberspace”, “Is cyberspace a real place?” If you missed last Wednesday night’s “Smart Parenting for a Smartphone Generation” presentation, you missed a straightforward, honest, sobering assessment of the culture our children are growing up in. One of the things that struck me was that up until recently a lot of the concern and evidence was anecdotal, but now it is supported by actual Cyber Psychology research. “There has never been a time in history where the strength of voices outside the immediate family speak so loudly into the lives of our kids. As parents and grandparents, we need to work hard to equip ourselves for the journey that lies ahead for our families.” Paul Robertson, youth culture specialist with Youth UnlimitedGTA, provided attendees with a list of “27 parental responses to smartphones” as a start to helping our children with this journey. The first two on the list involve prayer; for the Holy Spirit to form the hearts of our children, and wisdom for parents to understand the times. And while the news was highly concerning, Robertson reminded us that we are not a people without hope. He reinforced the importance of the home and school standing together to support each other. And he reminded us that we serve a faithful God who is seated on His throne. (Ps. 103:19, Isaiah 66:1, Rev. 4:2, 20:11)

Principal’s Corner:
We’ve heard your concerns about how HCS communicates with home, and we’re acting on it. More than once you’ve expressed your frustration with the number of different ways the school is communicating with home. In the past and “simpler” time, there was the pink sheet. It got hung up on the fridge door and you had everything you needed to know about the school in one spot, delivered in one way. Today, we share information about what is going on at school via multiple platforms. That gets frustrating and confusing if you are a family with more than one child in school.
So beginning next year we will work with one communication platform; Bloomz. This one app will cover all our communication needs. We have checked with other schools, staff has trialed a number of different platforms and this is the one we feel best meets our needs across the grades. We will introduce it to you in mid-August for parents who want to practice with it. For others who have difficulty, we will spend time at the “Meet the Teachers Night” early in the 2018/19 school year helping you understand how to use this platform. We trust that this will help clear up some of the frustration and communication difficulties. Thank you for sharing your opinion with us.
