Another fun picture from World Down Syndrome Day!

Today, March 21, is World Down Syndrome Day. The goal of a day like today is to raise awareness of what Down Syndrome is, what it means to have the condition, and how people with Down Syndrome play a vital role in our lives. For us at HCS that has once again become a reality since Caleb started attending here a few months ago. As you can see from the pictures on our facebook page, our students took it seriously by dressing up in colourful socks and clothes. Being aware of Caleb’s, and others’ unique needs, helps us as a school community look for ways that we can help him flourish in this environment, helping him be all that God created him to be. But it is not a one way street. Caleb’s unique needs and gifts allow all of us to flourish, more completely being the people and community which God has called us to be.
Caleb's parents give us insight into that truth in an article that they wrote for a Down Syndrome fundraising event in 2016:
“I read somewhere that having a child with Down Syndrome is the best gift you didn’t know you ever wanted and that is exactly how we feel about Caleb and the journey his life has taken us on. As time goes on Down syndrome and all that can go with it seems less and less scary and more and more beautiful. We celebrate how having one extra little chromosome helps make Caleb who he is but how it also teaches us how alike we all are as people even though we’re not all physically the same.
Caleb teaches us that no matter what happens in life, life is beautiful and we are never alone living that life. God faithfully walks with us and we walk with each other and that is one thing we will never stop celebrating.”
