Ontario Election, 2007 - Information Bulletin # 2

WHY ADVOCATE FOR FAIR-FUNDING AND JUSTICE?

Context

  1. Catholic, French and Native communities have fully-funded schools that teach their culture and worldview.

  2. The English “public” school system of the majority is officially secular and thus biased against people of religious faith.

  3. Rising tuition costs will make Christian schools a privilege for the rich in ten years time.

Principles

  4. All minority group citizens, including Protestants, are entitled to equal benefits of the law in education.

  5. School choice and educational diversity is a public good. Several different school systems make for a productive educational debate in the public domain.

  6. Multiculturalism is a constitutional value in Canada. It means respecting other cultures and being entitled to establish ones own group identity without discrimination.

Talking Points

  7. Should Christians and people of faith be engaged in the public arena?

  8. If Christians do not stand up for their own rights, why should anyone else?

  9. Should Christians hold out for perfect justice or should they be willing to support proximate justice?

  10. Given the emotional rhetoric in this campaign, do you think any political leader will want to touch this fair-funding issue in the future?

Action Note:

  11. Christian education should be widely available to Ontario citizens as an alternative to the materialism and humanism rampant in today’s culture.

  12. Christians have a calling to let their light shine and not hide it under the bushel of financial burdens.
