OCS Grade 8 teacher Mr. Hoytema sports his new look.
Eating Hot Dogs, Shaving Beards for a Cause
Ottawa Christian School (OCS) students recently raised more than $400 to support the Sud Academy, a refugee camp/school in Sudan.
"A fundraiser like this is important because we want the children to learn to serve as a part of what it means to be a Christian in the world," say staff members Grace Sontrop and Ada Speyers, who spearheaded the effort.
While OCS has supported Sud Academy for years, their fundraiser this year included a unique twist as Grade 8 teacher Mr. Hoytema agreeed to shave his beard if the children filled a large jar with silver coins. The jar was filled and, true to his word, Mr. Hoytema allowed his beard to be shaven on Feb. 20 during the OCS chapel service.
Hot dogs were also sold for four weeks to raise funds.
OCS undertakes a service project with a local and an international
focus each year.
