Christian Schools Canada gears up for leadership conference
OACS co-hosting national Christian education event
Tuesday June 12, 2012 -- Jennifer Neutel
Christian school leaders will be convening Sept. 27-29 to learn and network at the Christian Schools Canada (CSC) conference in Cambridge, Ont.

The Ontario Alliance of Christian Schools (OACS), Edifide and the Ontario Christian School Administrators Association (OCSAA) are hosting the upcoming event.

The conference is aimed towards school leaders and future leaders including principals, vice-principals, financial administrators, board members, development and advancement personnel and curriculum co-ordinators.

The theme is Understanding and Change: Christian Education in the 21st century.

“All the organizations involved in Christian Schools Canada are experiencing dramatic change,” says Hugo Marcus, OACS executive director and CSC board member.

He says the teacher organizations are experiencing change that technology has pushed onto the classroom. There are leadership practices being impacted by technology and other factors.

Technology is also impacting the way boards do work and relate to their communities, says Marcus.

The conference focuses on change in more just technology, though technology weaves itself through many of the changes, he adds.

“The conferences are always good for networking and good for exploring and deepening your understanding of new topics,” says Marcus.

Keynote speakers are Covenant College in Georgia’s dean of education and social sciences James L. Drexler; international speaker, author and educational leader Dan Beerens; Cardus senior fellow and director of research Ray Pennings; and Max De Pree Center for Leadership in California senior fellow Walter Wright.

The keynote speakers are each hosting workshop sessions, along with a variety of other leaders.

Christian Schools Canada is made up of organizations from three regions; the OACS along with Edified and OCSAA, the Prairie Centre for Christian Education, and the Society of Christian Schools in British Columbia, along with Christian Teachers Association of BC and Christian Principals Association of BC.

The conference’s steering committee has benefited from the implementation skills of OACS executive assistant Tena Boven, Edifide administrative assistant Faith Boer and OCSAA executive secretary Catherine Harkness, notes Marcus.

CSC national conventions are held every two years, with the location alternating among the three member regions.

This year’s event is being held at the Cambridge Hotel. The registration deadline is June 30.
