The May 30 event saw teams of four Grade 8 students from Knox Christian School in Bowmanville, Immanuel Christian School in Oshawa, Heritage Christian School in Lindsay, Northumberland Christian School in Cobourg, Durham Christian Academy in Courtice and Scugog Christian School in Port Perry participate. Ryan Hamelinck, DCHS math teacher, says the Grade 12 students started planning in February. Each student handed in a proposal for a game or activity they would like to run.
The day included life-size and interactive games of 3D Tic-tac-toe, Pentago and Gobblet, as well as a written test and group puzzle activities. Hamelinck says it was an opportunity for the high school students to show leadership, and for the Grade 8 students to have an enriching math experience. Jane Hoogendam, vice principal at Knox Christian School, says the students did an “awesome job.” “It inspired our students to experience the beauty and order found in God's world through numbers,” she says. Northumberland Christian School won the gold medal. The event will become a yearly math enrichment event. Other schools interested to start something similar are invited to contact DCHS to learn more.
