Ottawa Christian School exceeds fundraising goal
MP John Baird to make presentation at school
Wednesday October 7, 2009 -- Michelle Strutzenberger

Walking a trail along the Ottawa River on a bright fall day, more than 150 Ottawa Christian School (OCS) students and their families participated in a successful school fundraiser recently.

With a goal of $53,500, the school exceeded its objective to raise more than $54,000. The average raised per student was $306, and the average per family $604. Funds are directed to the school budget.

Advancement director Virginia Dawson says the energy of the students on the 10-kilometre walk was amazing.

“What blew me away was that even the junior kindergarten students walked the whole way,” says Dawson. Some of the participants jogged the route.

The weather — cool and sunny — also co-operated, and there was a great camaraderie among participants, according to Dawson.

“It was a wonderful community atmosphere.”

The walk, which started at 8:30 a.m., finished with a barbecue lunch and entertainment provided by a local Christian radio station.

Coming through on a promise he made if the fundraising goal was met, principal Paul Triemstra will be setting up his office on the school’s roof one morning this week.

On Thursday, Oct. 8, the Honourable John Baird, MP for Ottawa West-Nepean, will join him on the roof to make a presentation in recognition of the school’s fundraising efforts.

Incentives for the students raising pledges for this year’s walkathon included an OCS walkathon t-shirt for those who raised $100 and an OCS hoodie for those who collected $500 or more.

There were also prizes for students who garnered the highest number of pledges and for those who had the most number of sponsors.

Several local businesses also sponsored the event, including Bryan Hummel of Coldwell Banker Coburn Realty, Arnprior Chrysler, Manotick Tree Movers, LTR Industries, Carling Dental Clinic, Dr. John Oueis and Associates, Kommer Grafx, Kelly Huibers McNeely Accounting, Norlund Oil and Gas, The Gladstone Theatre and Gifford Associates.

Construction on a new facility for the Ottawa school is currently underway. The 36,000-foot building is located on Tartan Drive in Barrhaven and is slated to open in September, 2010.
