New Dublin school gears up for its 50th anniversary Amy Buzzell, an alumni and member of the elementary school’s anniversary committee, says the school hopes people will save the date and participate in the festivities. The theme for the school’s anniversary year is Heritage, Faith and Vision. HCCS was originally named Athens Christian School until 2005 when it acquired the former New Dublin Public School and moved. As the school was no longer located in Athens it changed its name. Administrator Jannie Feenstra says the new school name was selected to emphasize that it does have a rich heritage and wants to continue to pass that on. The school has selected the verse Psalm 126:3, which states, “The Lord has done great things for us and are filled with joy.” Feenstra says they chose that verse because the Lord has done great things for the school and “it really was amazing to look back and see that we are still here.” “I am excited to get people to come and to see how far we’ve come by faith,” says Buzzell, who is also Feenstra’s daughter and is sending her own daughter to HCCS this year. For some alumni, the anniversary weekend will be an opportunity to see the school’s new location and building for the first time. “We are really looking forward to meeting with past students and teachers and are excited about showing off our building,” says Feenstra, who started working at the school in 1969. When referring to the vision part of the anniversary theme, Feenstra says the school accomplished its strategic plan and now has to keep looking forward. It is important to celebrate 50 years, as Biblically the year of Jubilee is an important milestone, says Feenstra. She notes many of the school’s founding fathers will be able to see the fruits of their labour when they visit in June. The anniversary celebrations start Saturday, June 26, 2010, with an open house at the school from 3-5 p.m., followed by a dinner and program with guest speakers and music. On Sunday, June 27, there will be a worship service and strawberry social starting at 2 p.m. on the school ground. To learn more about HCCS and the anniversary weekend visit www.hccs.ca.
