OACS and partners bring Christian leadership event back to Ontario The ELDI is geared towards Christian school teachers who have leadership abilities and an interest to explore Christian school administration. The event is scheduled for Aug. 10-14 at the YMCA Geneva Park in Orillia, Ontario, and registration for the event is now open. The ELDI started 10 years ago as a joint project between Christian Schools International (CSI) and Calvin College and was first brought to Ontario for a midwest event in 2008. The OACS has partnered with CSI, Calvin College, the Ontario Christian School Administrators Association (OCSAA) and the Ontario Christian School Teachers Association (OCSTA) to co-ordinate and sponsor the event. “We are trying to work together to further this cause,” says Ray Hendriks, OACS director of advancement. The ELDI provides the opportunity for people who are committed to Christian education to learn from one another. “We feel a real need to develop leaders from within,” says Hendriks. Teachers may form their impressions for leadership from the pressures they see on current administrators, whereas at the ELDI they get the full picture of the challenges and joys the position entails, notes Hendriks. Experienced administrators share their vision for the position with participants through panel discussions. “The impact is very strong,” says Hendriks. Hendriks says he is excited the event will bring in people from Mexico and Nicaragua who will share their leadership experiences and challenges. The ELDI breaks the 18 participants into smaller groups to share stories, prayer support and journaling. Participants at last summer’s ELDI continued these relationships, and Hendriks says he looks forward to building on that success again this year. The Institute will explore several topics including the scope of school administration, what leadership is and how it is developed, the board-administrator relationship, school governance issues and discovering your strengths. “The reality is this is a great week to experience administration in a wonderful setting,” says Hendriks, adding it is a restful week with good professional development activities. Participants pay $200 USD with all other cost contributed through CSI. Registration is due to CSI by April 27, and includes an application, personal statement and two recommendations.
