School to change name to reflect broader reach
John Calvin Christian School to become Guelph Community Christian School
Friday March 28, 2008 -- Michelle Strutzenberger
John Calvin Christian School in Guelph is undergoing a name change to reflect its broader reach in the Christian community.

Effective July 1, the school will be known as Guelph Community Christian School.

Founded in 1961 by a group of families at First Christian Reformed Church, the school has since drawn families from across denominational lines.

In recent years many parents and supporters of the school have been discussing the need for a name that reflects the varied denominational backgrounds of the school’s families.

“We are very proud of our roots in the Reformed tradition,” said Bob Moore, the school’s principal, in a press release. “But we wanted a name that would convey the fact that today our school serves families from all different churches in the Guelph area.”

Current and past John Calvin families and staff were consulted widely about a name choice and Guelph Community Christian School was selected from a shortlist of suggestions. The change was approved at a special meeting of the school membership on March 18, 2008.

“This is an exciting step for our school, and it emphasizes that we are here to serve the whole city. We strive to be the leading option for all Guelph families who seek Christian education for their children,” Mr. Moore said. “By including the word community in the name, we are emphasizing the fact that we are not a denominational school, and that staff and parents partner together in the education process. This creates a strong sense of community at the school, which has always been one of the most rewarding aspects of life at John Calvin.”

John Vanasselt, director of communications for the Ontario Alliance of Christian Schools (OACS) concurs that including the word community in the name of the school sends a strong, positive message about who the school is aiming to serve.

A number of Christian schools in Ontario have decided to change their names in recent years, most often to reflect a shift in the scope of the school community.

While making a name-change is no small matter, particularly for those who have been involved with the schools for decades, the schools do not appear to be taking this lightly, Vanasselt adds.

“These are local decisions. They’re made after due diligence and research and careful thinking I believe.”
