OACS golf tournament raises $20,000 for curriculum development
Annual event an opportunity to play on prestigious course
Monday June 23, 2008 -- Jennifer Higgs
The Ontario Alliance of Christian Schools (OACS) Annual Invitational Golf Tournament raised $20,000 for curriculum development and gave supporters the opportunity to play on a prestigious course.

The June 17 event is a major fundraiser for the OACS curriculum department, with many supporters of Christian education attending each year. There were 144 players and 36 teams this year.

"A lot of the same people come every year, they enjoy the course," says Audrey Roorda, finance assistant at the OACS.

The tournament was held at Heron Point Golf Links, a ClubLink golf course, located south of Ancaster. The private course has been rated 52nd in Canada. The tournament is a scramble format.

Each participating team is affiliated with one of the 76 OACS member schools. The team with the lowest score at the end of the day wins the championship trophy, which is then displayed at their school for the year.

London District Christian Secondary School won the trophy this year, with team members Scott Vannoord, Jeff Dykstra, Chris Veeneman and Justin Coombs. The team had a score of 63. Glenn Hofland won for the longest drive and Angelo Grande for closest to the pin.

There was a variety of weather throughout the day, including winds, which affected the scores, notes Roorda.

This was the third year participating for Scott Vannoord, a graduate of London District Christian Secondary School. He says everything about the day was enjoyable.

"It's a wonderful day . . . could be the best scramble tournament we've been fortunate enough to play in and we look forward to next year," he says.

Participants enjoyed lunch and a speech from Henry Staal, who spoke about the value of Christian education for his family.

The event has grown in popularity. Four years ago it started to be a sell-out, and the previous two years there was a waiting list. Next year will mark the tournament's 10th year.

The golf tournament is traditionally held the third Tuesday in June.
