Upcoming choral festival organized 'to inspire love of singing'
32nd Ontario Christian High School Choral Festival takes place May 2
Friday April 25, 2008 -- Michelle Strutzenberger
The 32nd Ontario Christian High School Choral Festival takes place at Toronto District Christian High School (TDChristian) Friday, May 2.

“The purpose of the festival is to inspire the love of singing, to support the broader community of believers as we join together and create great music and to literally ‘put good music in the mouths of babes,’” says Karen Burke, co-ordinator of the festival. Burke is a clinician, speaker, conductor, musician and songwriter as well as a professor at York University.

This year’s event features more than 300 students from eight participating high schools. The students are members of choirs in their respective schools and are prepared in advance of the festival by their directors.

Well-known American choral conductor Phillip Shoultz III and Canadian conductors Nancy Kidd and Burke will be leading the massed choir.

Shoultz is director of music ministries at the Snellville United Methodist Church in Georgia as well as artistic director for the Atlanta Institute for Musicianship and Singing and Atlanta Youth Choir.

Kidd is the head of music at Bluevale Collegiate Institute in Waterloo. She has been a music educator for the Waterloo Region District School board for 30 years and received the Toronto Sun Teacher of the Year Award in 1997.

The repertoire for the choral festival includes a range of pieces, from an African a cappella song accompanied by percussion to “Gloria” from Mozart’s Twelfth Mass. Each school choir will also have the opportunity to present their own choral selections.

The schools performing in the festival are:

  • Toronto District Christian High School
  • Unity Christian School
  • London District Christian high School
  • Eden High School
  • Heritage Christian School
  • Woodland Christian High School
  • Kings Christian Collegiate
  • Smithville District Christian high school
