School to grow planned giving memorial garden The garden is to include a memorial component for donors as well as enhance the creation and environmental studies of the school curriculum, according to Karen Whitley, director of development. The school is completing a five-year strategic plan which includes a planned giving program. The garden is a latter component of that program. Whitley says the school has support from various community-members and organizations for the program. A member parent has offered to help with the landscaping and the local garden society and conservation authorities have agreed to pitch in with their expertise. “We’ll include our grandparents and grand-friends to help us maintain it along with the students,” says Whitley. As a further addition to the planned giving memorial aspect of the garden, those who want to make a bequest to the school and purchase a tree or stepping stone or other item in memory of a family-member or friend will be able to do that. Plants and flowers included in the garden, as well as verses on the stepping stones, are to come directly from the Bible, says Whitley. The garden will be called the TCS Planned Giving Garden: What Will Your Gift Blossom Into? This relates to the school theme of learning is for service, says Whitley. The proposal for the garden will be presented formally to school membership and board this fall with construction slated for the spring. TCS is a finalist for the Donner Canadian Foundation Awards for Excellence in the Delivery of Social Services in the traditional education category. The Donner awards recognize best practices in the non-profit sector in Canada. Recipients of the awards receive $5,000. If TCS wins for its category this year, it will be directing the funds to the garden development, says Whitley.
